At Farraway Stud we offer colt starting/backing for young horses that are at a physical and mental stage of development appropriate to being started under saddle.

If your young horse is under 4 years old, we recommend radiographs and a veterinary evaluation before they are started under saddle. 

Our program focuses on non-discipline specific fundamentals both on the ground and under saddle. We have the perfect set up to get young horses out and about on the trails, and confident in a variety of different situations.

Our young horse training program includes:

– Groundwork and confidence building in a variety of situations

– Long lining over obstacles and out on the trail

– Trailer loading if needed

– Foundation under saddle on the flat – lateral work, responsiveness to seat aids, bend, and suppleness.

– Trail experience from the start. 

Our aim is to build a solid foundation for any young horse so that they can be confident in a variety of situations and go on to focus on whatever discipline they are intended for. We believe in straight lines rather than endless circles, and prefer to get horses out on a variety of different terrain and seeing different things as soon as it is safe and appropriate to do so. 

Training board is $3000 per month. There is a 60 day minimum for unbacked horses. 

This includes hay, grain and supplements, 5 training sessions per week, and owner updates after each training session. Farrier and vet are billed separately.
